NUSP vows support for Maza, Ocampo; calls disqualification bids “cheap shots”

The country’s largest student union vowed its full support for senatorial candidates Liza Maza and Satur Ocampo.

In its recently concluded national congress, the National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) passed a resolution "to support and ensure the victory of Bayan Muna Representative Satur Ocampo and Gabriela Representative Liza Maza in their senatorial bid.”

Einstein Recedes, the newly elected National President of NUSP, said that “the NUSP and the thousands of student leaders under it are determined to quantitatively and qualitatively contribute to the concerted efforts of various groups in securing senatorial posts for Rep. Ocampo and Rep. Maza in the upcoming elections. Both of them serve as invaluable inspirations amidst the current political landscape.”

“In their almost nine years as members of the House of Representatives, we recognize their ardent efforts to advance the interest of the youth and the people. Only few in Congress practice genuine service as Rep. Ocampo and Rep. Maza do. As student leaders, we see it as our ethical duty to install them as future senators of the people,” he said.

Maza and Ocampo have recently urged the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to junk separate disqualification cases filed against them. Both petitions have been parried by Maza and Ocampo as “false” and “malicious”.

Vanessa Bolibol, Secretary General of the NUSP, scoffed at the petitions saying they belong to the “motley of cheap shots” that have been hurled at Ocampo and Maza by “State and military apparatchiks.”

“These petitions are but two among the motley of cheap shots thrown at Rep. Maza and Rep. Ocampo by State and military apparatchiks who disguise themselves as free thinkers and peace lovers. Note the tone of these petitions. Don’t they sound all too tired and familiar? Any moderately sane individual won’t buy these lousy tricks that have been recycled time and again,” Bolibol said.

“These petitions cannot tarnish the record of Rep. Maza and Rep. Ocampo as genuine servants of the people. We likewise urge the Comelec to junk these petitions and focus on important matters such as ensuring a clean, honest and efficient election,” she said. ###
